Collages

Hizelaya continues a series of thirty collages, which began 10 years ago.

She looked at the collages of Georges Braque and Henri Matisse, and she was surely influenced.

Hizelaya's first collages, created in 2010, were inspired by rejoneo (bullfighting on horseback). They depict amazons, horses, and bullfighters with unusual appearances.

She created the last four collages using decorative fabrics from Pierre Frey, Nobilis, and Toile de Jouy, which she kneaded, scratched, and burned before gluing them down. She also explores other themes, including the role of women and gender equality.

Seduced by Christo and Jeanne-Claude's project to wrap the Arc de Triomphe (which she was able to follow live from her studio near the Arc de Triomphe), she created an amazing collage.

Her canvases are consistently 0.60 x 0.90 meters. The constraint she imposed upon herself has, over the years, become a source of comfort. Hizelaya knows every nook and cranny of this space, its strengths as well as its weaknesses. Her backgrounds are always solid and often vibrant. The figure or subject is positioned in such a way as to leave a blank space, fostering a dialogue between the medium (the canvas) and the viewer.
